It’s interesting to note that Intel is making a splash on the MeeGo platform. A fusion of the Intel Moblin and Nokia Maemo operating systems, MeeGo is a Linux-based mobile OS that merges the knowledge and skills of these two companies.
I tend to think of MeeGo in terms of football partnerships, specifically Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham. In their own right, each was a potent force, but playing together for England they were legendary.
But back to the point. Intel has released new support and resources for developing MeeGo apps. Developers can download the MeeGo operating system and MeeGo SDK to set up a development environment and start creating apps.
The momentum for MeeGo is gathering pace. In a previous post I mentioned how at IDF 2010 several announcements highlighted the growing support: MeeGo netbooks were set to be released into the Russian market; a new tablet PC was demonstrated, powered by MeeGo; and there was also a MeeGo TV.
Intel says MeeGo is set to be deployed across many computing devices including next-generation smartphones, netbooks, tablets, media phones, smart TV’s and in-vehicle infotainment devices.
One of the advantages of the MeeGo OS is the complete set of developer tools that is available, enabling the relatively rapid creation of innovative applications. MeeGo also supports Qt app development, so you can write an app once and deploy it on MeeGo and other platforms.
This is the latest version of the OS, 1.1, and it includes better touch and telephony capabilities. The OS is expected to appear in netbooks, tablets and in-vehicle entertainment systems by the end of the year and by the first half of 2011 we should see handset devices in the market with MeeGo, says Doug Fisher, Intel’s vice-president of the Software and Services Group.
It’s an interesting (if not unexpected) development and the wider picture is that it rounds out the developer opportunities for the Intel AppUp Center. I’d expect to see more of these types of opportunities in the future and will be sure to keep you updated.
